“Things I Am Good At” — Building Confidence Through Visual Journals
In our kindergarten classroom, students recently explored the question "What am I good at?” through a meaningful visual journal activity. This experience helped students recognize their strengths, build confidence, and express their ideas in creative ways.
Using drawing and early writing, students created pictures that represented things they feel proud of, whether it was being a kind friend, building with blocks, playing sports, helping at home, or creating art. These visual journals provided an opportunity for students to reflect on their personal experiences and communicate their thinking in developmentally appropriate, engaging ways.
Students are developing an understanding of themselves as capable individuals.
By identifying and sharing their strengths, students are building self-awareness, confidence, and a positive sense of identity.
English Language Arts & Literature (ELAL)
Students are representing ideas through drawings, symbols, and early writing.
They are beginning to communicate personal experiences and thoughts using multiple forms of expression.
Social Studies

Recognizing personal strengths helps students understand their role within the classroom and beyond.
Fine Arts
Through drawing and creative expression, students are using art as a way to communicate meaning and tell their stories.
What This Looked Like in Our Classroom
Why This Matters
Connection to Home
Students reflected on their personal strengths through discussion and modelling
They created detailed drawings to represent their ideas
Many students added labels, letters, or words to enhance their meaning
Students shared their work with peers, building confidence and communication skills
Learning to recognize and celebrate personal strengths is a foundational skill in early childhood. When students see themselves as capable and valued, they are more willing to take risks, try new things, and engage in learning.
This learning task also supports the development of communication skills, creativity, and a sense of belonging within our classroom community.
You can continue this learning at home by asking your child:
What are you good at?
What makes you proud?
Can you draw or show me something you love to do?
Celebrating these moments together helps strengthen confidence and reinforces the importance of each child’s unique strengths.
