Kindergarten Review

As we wrap up the first part of the school year, I am excited to share a snapshot of the meaningful learning your children have experienced since September. The fall months have been filled with growth, curiosity, and joyful exploration as students settled into Kindergarten routines and began building foundational skills aligned with Alberta’s 2025 curriculum.

Wellness & Belonging

A major focus during the first term was helping students feel safe, connected, and confident at school. Students practiced building relationships, expressing feelings, and working cooperatively with others. Through play, routines, and guided discussions, students learned how to take turns, solve small problems, and show kindness and respect toward peers. These skills support well-being and set the foundation for successful learning throughout the year.

English Language Arts & Literacy

Kindergarten students engaged in rich literacy experiences through stories, songs, shared writing, and hands-on activities. Children explored how ideas can be shared through drawings, oral language, and emergent writing. They practiced recognizing letters, listening to sounds in words, and experimenting with writing using pictures and beginning letter sounds. Visual journals, storytelling, and creative art allowed students to express their thinking in meaningful ways.

Math

In math, students explored numbers, patterns, and shapes through play-based and hands-on learning. Children practiced counting, matching numerals to quantities, and representing numbers using objects, drawings, and movement. They explored patterns using colour, shape, and size, and began recognizing and describing two-dimensional shapes found in their environment. These experiences support early number sense and spatial reasoning.

Learning Through Play & Exploration

Play-based learning continued to be an important part of our classroom. Through centres and open-ended activities, students developed problem-solving skills, creativity, and independence. Building, creating, sorting, and role-playing allowed students to apply their learning in meaningful and engaging ways.

Looking Ahead

As we move into the next part of the school year, we will continue to build on these foundational skills. Students will further develop their literacy and numeracy understanding while strengthening their confidence, independence, and ability to collaborate with others.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. It has been wonderful to see the growth each child has made, and I look forward to an exciting winter filled with continued learning and discovery!

Have a fantastic winter break!
