We had another very exciting week in kindergarten.

Fire Station Field Trip
This experience was a fantastic way to extend our learning into the real world. It was an amazing hands-on learning experience, and the students were enthusiastic explorers throughout. I am so grateful to our parent volunteers for their support. The firefighters were wonderful hosts, and the students were curious, respectful, and eager to learn. I was so proud of them! Thank you so much to the 2 fire crews at Station 19 (Parkland) for their time. 

During our visit, students had the chance to:
  • Meet firefighters
  • See the fire trucks up close
  • Explore important tools and equipment
  • Learn about safety gear and how firefighters help our community
  • Ask thoughtful questions about emergencies, fire safety, and community helpers
Literacy & Communication
  • Asking and answering who, what, where, when, and why questions
  • Sharing ideas and personal experiences

Students practiced oral language skills by asking the firefighters questions, listening carefully to demonstrations, and sharing their observations with peers and teachers.

Numeracy & Problem Solving

  • Counting, comparing, and noticing patterns
  • Exploring measurement through real-life objects

Students compared the size of fire hoses, ladders, and helmets and noticed numbers and symbols on the trucks and equipment. They also explored time concepts when firefighters talked about response times.

Social Studies: Identity & Community

  • Recognizing community helpers and their roles
  • Understanding how people work together to keep communities safe
  • Appreciating diversity, cooperation, and responsibility

The tour helped students understand how firefighters support the community and highlighted the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and caring for others.

STEM & Play-Based Learning

  • Investigating how things work
  • Exploring tools, materials, and structures
  • Building curiosity through hands-on experiences

Students explored the mechanics of fire trucks, sirens, hoses, compartments, and gear, and observed how equipment is designed to solve problems and keep people safe.

Well-Being & Citizenship

  • Practicing safety skills
  • Building confidence through new experiences
  • Developing respectful behaviour during community outings

Students practiced walking safely as a group, navigating new spaces, and showing respect and gratitude toward community members.

What’s Next?

Back in the classroom, students will be

  • Drawing and labeling their field trip picture
  • Retelling events in order
  • Building fire stations and vehicles during play and STEM centres

Welcome Back, Kindergarten Families! We are so happy to be together again after our time apart during the teacher strike. The children have settled back into our routines with big smiles, open hearts, and an amazing sense of excitement. Our focus this week was on reconnecting, rebuilding community, and celebrating the season together, all while learning through the lens of Alberta’s 2025 Kindergarten Curriculum. This time of year is full of curiosity, creativity, and wonder, perfect for learning about friendship, feelings, and fall fun!
