Hello Families,

We have had another great week in kindergarten! A big thank you to all of our families who joined us for our Kindergarten Math Open House! It was so wonderful to see the excitement on the children’s faces as they shared their learning with you. Our evening was filled with hands-on math games, playful problem-solving, and opportunities for students to demonstrate their growth as mathematicians. From counting and building to number exploration, the learning games highlighted the many ways math is woven into our daily routines and play. Your participation made the event extra special. Watching your child explain their thinking, try out new strategies, and celebrate their successes alongside you builds confidence and helps connect home and school learning.

Literacy
This year, we will be following the "UFLI" program. Daily, students work on learning the letters of the alphabet, the sounds they make, and how to print them. We also sing songs about the letters and their sounds to help remember them. Each day, students will draw a picture to match the letter we learned about (e.g., S is for sun).

*I can identify letters by characteristics. (Letters Ss and Tt)
*I can make connections between letters and sounds in words.

Alphabet Hunt at Home
  • Literacy: I can recognize and use letters of the alphabet in varied contexts.

  • Play & Inquiry: I can explore and share ideas through playful activities.

  • Wellness/Citizenship: I can build confidence and independence in learning.

How to Play
  1. Pick a letter of the alphabet (example: S).

  2. Hunt around your home to find 3–5 things that start with that letter sound (e.g., spoon, sock, soap).

  3. Say the letter name, its sound, and the object’s name aloud.

    • “S, /s/, spoon!”

  4. Take turns with a family member or try a new letter on your own.

Extension Ideas

  • Movement: Each time you find an item, hop, clap, or do a silly dance.

  • Recording: Draw or write the items on a piece of paper.

  • Challenge: Try tricky letters like Q, X, or Z.

Encourage your child to listen for the first sound in each word. If they’re ready, help them notice other sounds in the word, too. Keep it playful and light, mistakes are part of learning!

Listening
This week, students learned all about active listening skills at the carpet (large group instruction). We reviewed the following:
  • Eyes are watching
  • Ears are listening
  • Thinking with our brain and heart
  • The mouth is quiet
  • The body is still
Social Skills
This week, we read the story, "My Mouth is a Volcano." My Mouth Is A Volcano takes an empathetic approach to the habit of interrupting and teaches students a witty technique to capture their rambunctious thoughts and words for expression at an appropriate time. Told from Louis's perspective, this story provides an opportunity to teach students the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to speak. Students practiced waiting and raising their hands to share their ideas.
